Mandriva trying to get community on desktop version ? Slackware rumor?

Mandriva is still alive. Maybe need some directions to find a community still willing to pay for a mandriva desktop.

In the meantime, Ubuntu is trying a 20 million pre-installed desktop on new pc(s).

PC era is gone. People are hoping pc will be mainframe and smartphones will be pc? ARM can do mainframe with flash cards, in the mean time with terabyte possibility, from 8 gate nand flash transistors(first generation was 2 gates).

So, the technology just marches on. Some will be left behind. Others hope desktop without social networks can survive. With Facebook, clicking on the pictures of a friend of a friend, you can be nosy about many people you never knew. and find some surprises you don't need.

What this will lead to is ecommerce with mobile payment(NFL). But more likely impulse buying with smartphone. People today have plenty of cash. And willing to spend on technology of 6 month long obsolescence(apple iPhone and iPad).

How do small organizations catch up on software technology change, one never knows? Even large organization like Kodak quit digital cameras when they don't have smartphone cameras. This world is changing, but watch out for huge(data compression terabyte stprage) nand storage devices coming on the market.

Russians will invest more in Mandriva.

Re: Mandriva trying to get community on desktop version ? Slackware rumor?

There were Slackware rumors, because website was down.

Store was in operation and Slackware arm is in search engines.

Apparently Patrick is moving into the arm market for Slackware. Hopefully, he can work out the Firefox browser for 8 bit OS(no thumb or thumb2 or intel 32 bit branch prediction). Firfox v1.5.0.12(i386) maybe be adapted and upgraded with ssl v3.0, TLS v1.0 and video encryption 10 bit for online banking.

Slackware is a one man operation and can be very frugal to maintain. But as PC era ends, it must port itself on another platform ARM.

Once Slaclware can do firefox v1.5..0.12; You have to have opengL to run video of extension apps plus all the other codec and Dolby mobile sound.

Re: Mandriva trying to get community on desktop version ? Slackware rumor?

Mandriva being in Brazil and France had problems of keeping up with the hardware design trends, and missed the big opportunity of WiFi connectivity.

The big change to big data started in 2007, from DTV standards being adopted in the US. DTV instead of analog TV brought consolidation of codec to mpeg4/h.264 and hdmi hardware which all PC manufacturers will adapt 5 years from 2007.

So, now we see all the motherboards being ARM cpu and hdmi and USB flash memory exclusively.

These technology consolidation obsoletes older multi technology conversion software kernels and apps. Browser extensions are now apps and games in big money. OpenGL is the video accelerator. consolidation simplifies, only a few codec are being used instead of everything goes.

WiFi connectivity saves money to wire up houses and apartments. The WiFi system is not yet totally unsecured free hotspots. But mac address encryption will add security to free hotspots. Even I am working on secured free hotspots to do online banking.

But its not too late for Mandriva and slackware alike. Some trends like Ubuntu 12.04 and Android v4.0 leads the way to kernel version selections. GCC compilation of ARM platform is getting better too.

Re: Mandriva trying to get community on desktop version ? Slackware rumor?

Mandriva Linux is hoping community direction will keep the linux distro upto date and maintain an income. But alas, the hardware is going smartphone, tablets and declining PC and laptop sales.

This is because desktop apps are not productive, people have big data from data centers to distribute. Big data is financial related even for mobile payments. Linux is very far behind when kernels are for complex installation of components in the PC era. Smartphones use a minimum of components. Social network is using mostly instagram to keep in touch.

So, what is cloud computing is making webpages the operating system of smartphones. I see big changes in the way operating system now puts more emphasis on website data center size(facebook). Things are changing very fast for Mandriva or Rosa to catchup.

We have built telco communications system using satellites even gps. Now we are building home communication system with wifi set-top box(Moxi as data center and its own multiuser browser OS to run webpage operating system). Then websites will use webpages to run realtime operating systems(posix packets) to do apps and games for interactive TV.

Unless you don't see the operating system on a webpage, you havn't seen nothing yet.

Arm 'neon' and thumb2 can decode mpeg4/h.264 vga. what it needs is to decode mpeg4/h.264 hdmi 720p or better.

Once that is done, ARM cpus can be much faster not going back to i386 instructions.

Re: Mandriva trying to get community on desktop version ? Slackware rumor?

Mandriva went the route of knoppix, all the apps were included to make up 4 gB of memory. This of course made many computers and laptops not suitable for installation. It also made community version difficult to develop. It is an experience Knopper suffered over the years. The new Knoppix is more selective and condensed down to 700+ mB.

Having said that, The Mandrive distro managed to install itself to a hdd. First to determine hardware configuration, then install software that you select for desktop. Then internet browser to do apps and games within webpages.

There are the 32 and 64 bit versions. While it was an ambitious undertaking, it did not have any hardware compatibility preference. Its Russian market has been taken over by Rosa versions.

These are the very reason that Mandriva does not have financial success. At the height of their popularity, Sales were $6 million including Brazil subsidiary. There are no reason to hope for a financial bananza.

Footnote:
Software company often had to target their solutions to a popular computer(large volume production). Linux distros never had a large market because it was not made for preinstall on a specific computer. Some managed to install on old IBMPC with pentium III cpus. Pentium 4 had strange chipset and driver requirements. Then i series multi cpus with Intel drivers. Which has yet to develop large number production models.

ARM platform being mobile application of long battery life, will take over much of the computer market. Also the blades in data centers. Data transfer speed is more important than rich experience.

Re: Mandriva trying to get community on desktop version ? Slackware rumor?

Rosa Lxde beta has been released at over 871 mb length.

Its a desktop with simple GUI.It has a few control panels.

Not for people interested in browser operating system and big data paperless cloud computing.

This is not going to make Russian computer market any better. Smartphones will make tablets the choice of Russians.
