Wifi drivers for windows ? An understanding ?

There is a difference in the wifi driver structure between Linux and windows.

Linux wifi drivers do the functions for the wifi chipset. then the kernels find the site and connects since 2.6.24. Network config is not needed for wireless wifi connect.

From win95 to W2k, the drivers for wifi are for funtional purpose. windows need a utility to find the radio signals from hotspots, assign an ip address, and ssid name, and then select connect to a hotspot. Starting with win XP, the utility is built into zero config software in the tray icon to be clicked, you select the hotspot and connects. The drivers for XP can be very short. The drivers for older operating system maybe more than 5 mB at least to install the utility(gUI) for connecting wifi to hotspot.

Once you understand the difference, its easier to find drivers on the internet. Many older wifi cards are now compatible with XP; but harder to find old drivers for all windows including win95-2k. Right click on wireless icon in Ubuntu can reveal wireless driver name, which maybe not compatible with chipset. 2 wire wifi/g pc-card used prism54pci in Ubuntu 8.04, but can not connect to free hotspots site survey. some suggest that Linux net manger connects if wires are connected to ethernet. But if wires are disconnected then wireless network is installed. In this case, no ethernet wires connected but 2- wire pc-card is not connected.

Re: Wifi drivers for windows ? An understanding ?

Its important to know from Linux kernels the driver name used for wireless wifi chipset. Many times drivers are corrupted.  So, to get wireless working with certain net manager, it has to look at the verbose, and restart net manager a few times.

In my case, no ip address of 192.168.0.xxx.

I probably had to disconnect net manager to ethernet, and restart to connect to wireless ssid.

Turned out, the driver for 2-wire wifi pc-cards are prism54pci it connects and all the connection info is correct. But aparently the chipset and circuit needed burn in. Meaning use it for a while to drive off moisture.

So, 2 wire wifi 802.11/g pc-card will be room temperature burn in for 24 hours on the IBM 600x laptop with Ubuntu 8.04 operating system. Which turned out to have one of the best collection of wifi drivers for all wifi pc-cards.

Re: Wifi drivers for windows ? An understanding ?

Linux kernel 2.6.24 used by Ubuntu 8.04 will select one of the drivers to run wifi cards. Ubuntu 8.04 can also run kernel 2.6.30 if you select it before booting Ubuntu.

W2k and xP are different when you install wifi. There are no drivers in the operating system and you have to download whatever wifi card you have. Trying out many wifi drivers may run into conflicts and corruption of drivers and utilities that survey hotspots and select to connect. Often the utility in w2k did not get installed to use the wifi card. XP has one microsoft zero config utility for all wifi cards, and there is not much problems of conflicts or corruption of drivers.

Re: Wifi drivers for windows ? An understanding ?

Ubuntu 8.04 uses 2.6.24 and 2.6.30 kernels at your choice. The wifi drivers are pretty much the same.

Many older wifi cards are usable, but prism pcmcia cards like compaq WL100 do not work and stalled the operating system. There are also problems with SMC 2632W and 2835W wifi(hostap), which are atheros chipsets. 3C0M airconnect  11 mbps also prism has problems connecting.

These wifi cards also do not work well with Slitaz 3.0 stable which is kernel 2.6.30.

Some suggest that there maybe chipset failure. We will have to google the linux drivers to know?

Footnote:
Intersil prism wifi chipset can have its firmware hacked, then they don't work with orinoco_cs drivers anymore.

Re: Wifi drivers for windows ? An understanding ?

Windows wifi has zero config site survey automation. It replaces many utility softare in Linux or pre-XP operating systems. its simple and works well.

Some wifi card manufacturers do have fancy utility programs that can config many variables, mostly for home network system from set-top boxes of cableTV. We find nothing there to be improved.

What was accomplished by Microsoft is to speed up /g and /n wifi cards(ofdm mode), by chipset temperature stabilizing software. Cut the data transfer speed to maintain chipset at a stable temperature. Improvements are impressive. Previously at 65 kBps now can go up to 300 kBps; half the speed of /b Orinoco wifi cards using DSSS mode.

There is only one more improvement which is MAC encrypted unsecured hotspot. A video 10 bit encryption may have to be added as well for online banking with ssl v3.0 and/or TLS v1.0.
