Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Hi all !

I'm very happy to see that Austrumi is still active.

Austrumi is actually a very good work !

Light, nice, quick, easy to use... :)

Yet, I meet a very strange bug with Austrumi 2.4.5 (and 2.4.8).

When I use the original version, just downloaded, it works perfectly on my Asus Eee 1000H Netbook.

It gets an IP address from my DSL box at boot time (wired connection) and I can access Internet.

But... if I make a small change (for example, wallpaper) and choose "Save&Exit", on the next start, Austrumi fails to get an IP address at boot time !?! :(

I've done many tests and I'm sure it's "Save&Exit" action that "breaks" IP address setting.

??? What could be the problem ???

I have to run manually 'dhcpcd' command to get an IP address ! :(

It's quite annoying...

I tried to add this at the end of 'fvwm2rc' settings file:

-----

...

AddToFunc InitFunction
+ I Exec exec /usr/sbin/dhcpcd
+ I Exec exec /usr/bin/setxkbmap -layout fr
+ I Exec exec /root/firefox/firefox

-----

but 'dhcpcd' doesn't start.

The 2 last lines works, I get a french keyboard an Firefox starts but fails to display the home page because, of course, no address IP was set.

Could you help me, please ?

Any idea to solve these problems ?

By advance, thanks for your help.

Regards,

Steve.

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

It maybe as simple as the directories are incorrect for dhcpcd? Kernels now use dhcp with all the drivers of wifi automatically mounted after boot. If wall paper is changed it is missing the bindings to do dhcp as in the first wall paper?.

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Hi!

I actually don't understand why dhcpcd works manually and not automatically, called in fvwm2rc file. :(

I use an absolute path to call it.

I tried to redirect errors in a file but I just get an empty file.

Code:

+ I "Exec exec /usr/sbin/dhcpcd 2> /root/dhcp_log.txt"

It makes me crazy !

I go to sleep... to try to sleep...

Regards,

Steve

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Dhcpcd(version 5.x) is an application. That calls for DSL drivers for your computer supported by kernels.

dhcp is a command.

Can you do it all in window manager layer automatically? Only the keyboardmap put in the window manager works.

Once you installed in a USB key to save and exit a wall paper, your directory from window manager is /sda/... or /sdx/... to reach any applications. Austrumi bindings did not have /sda for network connection.

Doing it manually, you have to use a terminal in window manager, and it goes directly to the kernels to execute any commands or applications.

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Hi!

In fact I have discovered that dhcpcd is well called by fvwm2rc file but it takes a few seconds to get the IP address: Firefox starts to quickly and fails to display its home page.

So, I created a file ff_start.sh

Code:

#!/bin/sh
sleep 3
/root/firefox/firefox &

and then I call this script from fvwm2rc file.

Another solution is just to click "refresh page" in the browser but it's better to get home page displayed instead of an error page on start. ;)

I'll test all that tonight.

Any smarter solution ?

Regards,

Steve.

If you know how to use Austrumi, you may not have to fix any of the bugs you create?

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Hi!

YEEES!
I've just tested my workaround, my little "do it yourself" works ! :)
It's perhaps not THE perfect solution but it's enough to please me and I hope it can help other people.
It's very simple but this kind of problem can stop a beginner and make him look away from Austrumi that would be a pity !

But that doesn't explain the cause of my problem.
If I well understand you, according to you, it's normal to have a dhcp problem after "Save&Exit" on a USB pendrive (in fact SD card in my case), due to path problem ?
I don't remember having this problem with previous releases... :/
I'm going to check that.

I'd like other people to give their advice on the subject.
Do you meet the same problem ?
How did you solve it ?

...but alas, this forum is almost a desert ! :(
Fortunately Antag1, you're here to prevent it from dying !
Yet, Austrumi is a so nice work, all the planet should talk about it ! ;)

Regards,

Steve,
bringing his modest fruit in the desert. ;)

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Is your SD card SDHC?

Will rootdelay=x fix the slowness of SDHC to boot all the programs?

Yes, it's a SDHC 16GB SD card.

Could it be a problem ?

Steve.

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Well, you had to put the drams to sleep for 3 seconds to read the files on the SDHC.

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

Hi !

I've tested again previous versions of Austrumi to see from what release the bug appears with dhcp and "Save&Exit" action.

All releases are on my SD card. I just have to play with name of folders to switch between releases (active release must be in "/austrumi" folder). I don't rename folders from Austrumi but from TinyCore (very quick boot) to avoid potential problems (live update).

Releases 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 : OK ! "Save&Exit" done and dhcp still OK (IP address well obtained at boot time).
Releases 2.3.x : here comes the bug ! No IP address obtained at boot time. :(

I've seen in releases history that dhcp version has changed many times.

Perhaps Andrejs could enlighten this mystery...

Meanwhile, fortunately, I lauch dhcpcd command from fvwm2rc file and I get an IP address. It's better to access Internet ! :)

Regards,

Steve

Re: Austrumi 2.4.5: strange dhcp bug after "save&exit"

You are lucky to use DSL. I use only WiFi usb or pc-card. And from kernel version to kernel versions, driviers may or may not work. So much for Linux kernels.

Austrumi versions progressively change to near latest kernel versions. But dhcpcd drivers do not change much. However, net manager had been changing.
