Warning! Linux wifi drivers detroys the unit after use.

As we shake down SliTaz wifi drivers, so far only dwa642 can be used repeatedly. The taiwan(HFA384x) made orinoco prism 2.5 was destroyed in use. This happens because of the chipset has ability to change firmware inside the circuit. You can install firmware into flash memory inside. this happens on certain vintage of wifi design.

On Orinoco silver, SliTaz autodetected it to be ath9k drivers. But it had to be orinoco_cs(prism I) loaded first, then ath8k to work.

So, you are warned not to install firmware on some orinoco wifi chipsets(no more access point).

The wifi drivers in general used by Linux are not up to date with chipsets. So, many people used ndiswrapper to work their wifi chipsets. This maybe safer, but more time consuming to install.

Anyway, this confirmed many reports that many distros have wifi drivers from kernels that only work a few times. what they don't know is that once inside firmware is changed, you might as well throw the wifi unit in the trash.

Footnote:
kernel 2.6.30 can not unload drivers itself, before you install the second driver;. this is also how wifi unit are destroyed. Linux is very time consuming to make it work for yourself free. Many people live with it for a while then move on to another distro but had to live with the same kernel defects. You have to lock Linux down to simple dhcp servers to have it working for long. Livecd even had to have exact install process to avoid destroying wifi hardware.

Linux is a hobbyist's toy. Play with it and discover bugs galore. Hobbyists have much time to waste on open source. Clean up is impossible so Linus moved on to new bugs instead of fixing old ones in the kernels. To use SliTaz we are identifying  hardware compatibility(wifi units) and how you can get lucky to have it working somehow by substitution. Easier than to change codes that create bugs. Linux works with vga video, PIII cpu, 320 mB of mrmory(SliTaz, others 1 gB). Now, Dlink DWA642 /g or /nwifi pc-card. These compatible drivers have no more extensions or shared files so they are safe from bugs galore.

Re: Warning! Linux wifi drivers detroys the unit after use.

The story of Linux does not end here on dependency and bugs galore issues. It is also in the source of file switching symlinks  blacklisting problems. Many bugs started in gcc GNU system in its compiler.

Android using browser operating system(Java) eventually, will have a minimum operating system with much touch screen features and window manager in browser.. The webpage protocol(reduced pixels) will keep bugs to a minimum. Currently realtime scripts are still in its infancy, and webpages are not fast enough(not using on demand servers doing consolidation of links on each webpage) to avoid bugs.

The change will come, and internet surfing will be fast and cheap.
