Cheap transportation solution ? $1000 1995 cars in 2012

Cheap transportation is to buy an old car at the lowest price. Today, you have to buy 1995 cars around $1000US. Year 2000 cars are around $2500US.

There are 4 levels of restoration to make these cars function perfectly for another 70,000 miles or 10 years more. Driver level is just for your own approval. Then there are street level, show level and concours level. these levels have to have good auto body, no rust and no dents.

Once you selected a car that you can restore, it has to be running without malfunction. Because cars today are controlled by computer. you can use a tool to diagnose all the defects in a car. Once he functionality is found out, then you can change all the fluids in the car to service it for another 70,000 miles.

Antifreeze and ATF, especially for aluminum engines with gaskets and transmission fluid may be sludged. These will prevent expensive repairs from happening.

So, driver's level of restoration maybe just several hundred dollars extra. For street level upto rental car standards start with year 2000 cars, restoration cost may be $3-7000US of work. To do show level and concours level $250000US to begin stripping down and rebuild every part on the car. there maybe many surprise of cost overrun.

But in the end its fun and pride of owning an old car restored by you desire. Try to find a car for cheap transportation may take lots of time. Some cars are of classic design in this treasure hunt?

Services by national centers are often risky of your car being damaged by untrained help. Its best to search for compalints using google on certain locations of service center that you intended to use. And after finding the damages usually happened, you can talk to the service people about it before work is done on your car.

Dealers maybe better, they charge $110/hr rate. But they may have complaints of weekly troubles on car. you have to avoid that dealer. Computer inspection also may find more services to be done. Sometimes complaints are of work not done but charged.

So that leaves you with DIY jobs on your car. Before you buy any used car see if you are capable to change the fluids of antifreeze and ATF(manual transmission not included). Some car are easier than others.. especially older than 1992(before changing to aluminum engine) cars.

Or else, community colleges had to train more service personnel for car repair.

Re: Cheap transportation solution ? $1000 1995 cars in 2012

Changing fluids in any car depends on how much automation is built in the car. Power steering is not on small cars.

Synthetic oil can stand higher temperature will last longer. Some like Mobil 1 has MoS2 particles in the oil for wear factor, can last 75,000 miles without changing. so, its up to you to have a maintenance policy when to change oil.

Antifreeze is now for extended service upto 150,000 miles. But its really 5 years or sooner due to oxidztion problems spoiling gaskets if not changed. Cooling and winter heater operation made antifreeze performance important. ATF for automatic transmission has to be changed some 36,000 miles, others 100,000 miles depending on design for wear and tear.. In general, automatic transmission has to be driven steadily not too much acceleration in practice, to make it last longer(no overheat, no stressing metals, not too much pressure built up).

Restoration of an old car is learning how to check on a used car's condition. Most dealer speak on a clean car. Meaning its well maintained. No rust on fenders is clear value when you buy used cars. Interior is clean is value indeed. And fluids are changed often too(clear liquids). Tires with full treads means you saved money, but check tire pressure for slow leak problem(rim or stem or old rubber tire leaks). Brake pads condition is revealed in brake paddle position when engaged. Brake fluid level too? Battery condition depend on liquid(acid) level. Liquid too low means replacement needed soon. Battery only used for starting the car will have good liquid level to last a longer time.

Air conditioning is a big expense to repair or recharge, The new liquids are oiled to last a little longer than 10 years. Older cars not having oil fails in seven years or sooner. Its cheaper to not repair the air conditioning feature.

Now you are ready to go out to buy a used car for restoration(how much you can save cost of restoration)? Take your time to wait for a valued car to come your way. Often it is a luxury car well maintained owned by older rich people.

Picking a used car to buy, takes you to car reviews on the internet, to find former owners' complaints. This usually reflects in the used car prices on Craigslist.

If you use the car, its cheaper to buy. If you try to sell it for a profit, cars with lots of complaints are not for you. This is because owner complaints are usually victims of bad mechanic. You might find a good mechanic to save your car.

Once you decided on the car of your choice, then Craigslist  may have a car near you to look at.

Car dealers tend to make you fix parts that you don't need to fix, which makes you a good customer and pay them a lot of money. The other extreme is AAA suggested garage that do roadside service, they only fix parts to get you going. Which is what you needed most at times and not wasting money like dealer service.

You could goto any service shops but you would take a risk of untrained help. Ruin your car more than fixing them to last for a while.

Dealers will fix your car properly if salemen tell them that your car will come back as trade-in. Which means do the least to resale for a better profit.

Once your car is properly taken care of, driving will be more of a pleasure.

Re: Cheap transportation solution ? $1000 1995 cars in 2012

There are many strip mall used car dealers. They generally try to sell $12,000 cars. But they maybe stuck with 1999 cars bought at auctions many years ago. On internet, they can be not much more than kelly blue book price.

Most of these cars are inspected and invested by the dealer, so it maybe better quality than you can buy from individual owners. So, search for old used cars from googling, maybe carsforsale.com. Cheap transportation indeed.

Most cars today had been designed with computer control. If you have harness contact resistance problems, then you have a lemon(wires need recrimped). but the mechanical parts gnerally can be lasting for 500,000 miles. Ceramic brake pads are more expensive but last longer. Fluids had to be changed more often on some cars.

So, its more important to inspect car doors to make sure power windows work well. And inspect the conditions of the fluids and levels. Body rust can not be tolerated.

Have fun finding your cheap transportation for the next ten years? To get trouble free servie free 70,000 miles, you have to repair some moving parts after you buy the cheap transportation.

Re: Cheap transportation solution ? $1000 1995 cars in 2012

How to save battery for longer life, since AAA predicted newer cars failed batteries in three years instead of five years. Its because newer cars put alternator on head lights, and others like heater fan may overload the alternator. Bateries are discharged if you use too many electric devices while you drive.

Only use battery for starting the engine is one way to save battery for a longer life. New Beetle can charge the battery better if the hand brake is on, and head lights are not on. American cars can not shut off the headlights while the engine is on.

You have to of course make sure the computer is set to charge the battery more efficiently.

Fun of restoring a 1998 new Beetle of 124124 miles is in the driving.

Harnesses were all recrimped and secured with silicon rubber in the middle of wire length(reduce vibration amplitude). This prvented contact resistance problems of older cars and frequent computer malfunction from changing resistance problem(0.1 ohm to 40,000 ohms).

The car was not rusted, and the interia was in fairly good shape. Modern computer shows all defects if happens.

Semi metallic brake pads were installed on new rotors(expected life 40,000 to 70,000 miles). New battery had to be installed. Oil filter were changed after cleaning and flushing, now the oil after 1500 miles is still clear and not blackened.
