Lucky or unlucky with 802.11b wifi pc-cards ?

SMC EZ wireless SMC2632w v2(atmel_cs) is supported by Ubuntu 8.04 OS(231 kBps rate downloads). How lucky it is. V1 however is not supported.

Breeze PRO.11 SA-PCR wifipc-card made in Isreal, has config files for different countries, but alas, can not do site survey for hotspots and therefore can not connect to any router. The usa fcc file(13 channels) has to have config data of site name, channel, transfer rate(auto) and power saving. So far it does not work in XP. Might work in W95/98 and W2k/NT if profile of hotspot can be inserted into the driver4.41(Microsoft XP zero config connect).

Some Symbol Spectrum24 wifi pc-card were not properly labeled from Taiwan.but the mechanical parts are exactly the same, and is supported by orinoco_cs drivers in Ubuntu 8.04(kernel 2.6.24). So,you could be very lucky with older IEEE 802.11 (b) pc-cards.

Then there is the WaveLan(2 mbps for 65 kBps) wifi pc-card from lucent, which has to be hotplugged in XP with v7.82 drivers. The firmware interferes with sound drivers and freezes the sequential software process. Once booted, then hotplugged, this wavelan works quite well  Don't forget to safely remove it to prevent any damage for the next hotplug.

Re: Lucky or unlucky with 802.11b wifi pc-cards ?

These wifi pc-cards are all rather aged. And they may have several hardware problems, such as moisture on the integrated circuits(runs hot), or dried up electrolytic capacitors(low voltage). By using these wifi cards, they may come back to life, instead of freezing the cpu; and when pulled out of pcmcia socket, will free up the cpu to have mouse functions.

Moisture is driven off by high heat when the card is powered for a few days. Breeze wifi runs very hot, but drivers lack XP zero config capability to do site survey and connect?

Dried up electrolytic capacitor is cured by power on the capacitor for a few days; and captured moisture in electrolytic solution. Once cured, capacitors are good as new. Just keep on using it. Lack of use may lose it again.

Re: Lucky or unlucky with 802.11b wifi pc-cards ?

The reason that Linux was popular was the fact that peripheral drivers are generic, one driver fits all. started with xvesa, which many tiny Linux distros still use.

Beginning with kernel 2.6.24, many wifi drivers can use orinoco_cs. And some can use at9k_cs. Many used BCM 43k. So, you can get quite lucky, just plug in the pc-card wifi, and immediately it gets connected to free hotspots. If you use at home and you need WEP or wpa, you may find many problems of drivers not supporting wpa encryption.

With the paperless society coming, and apps and games on browsers, Linux may become popular again, if only big data on the cloud has all the simplified codec from LINUX.

802.11b is now obsolete because cableTV wifi routers do 802.11G.

New drivers also will boot and connect during startup. 3 minutes after turn on, you are on the internet.
