Desktops can be updated by motherboards and cooling fans. So you probably can not find old desktops to collect.
Laptops are fixed by motherboards, you maybe able to change a few storage devices, hard disk, super floppy, USB Nand flash cards and dvdRW.
This website of forum discusses many laptops for enterprise system and internet more likely. Starting with laptops made after 1997(100 mhz MMX cpu). Laptops of 1999 are now treasures because of discovery of Orinoco wifi DSSS speed of downloading using Microsoft ondemand servers or commonly known as dotnet strategy(ISP or portal servers). So far, DSSS 550 kBps is without error and resending packets. But 900 kBps is tested with Orinoco pc-cards made by Lucent, Agere or Avaya. Agere 7.82 drivers can be used with many brands of wifi/b cards. WiFi OFDM is hopeless because of chip overheating.
So, read up on the possibility of collecting these older laptops and enjoy the speed of internet surfing.
We are pioneering the resurrection of older laptops for internet surfing by studying technology to get the best efficiency out of combinations of older laptop parts. Discussions of RAMs, hdd,, dvdRW and WiFi cards can make you an expert in collecting older laptops for a bargain and make a profit someday on ebay.
There are many laptops on ebay, that people are selling cheap because they bought ones with user/password not known. I got one with Debian linux. Not been used for 4270 days and it stopped at the user login.
So, I have to strip out the grub. Which prevents the DVD to boot to install W2k or XP. Its a Gateway Solo 3450 with docking station.
To remove the grub in mbr, I have to use fdisk(partition creation) from W95/98 startup floppy.
So, the adventure of removing Linux to goto Windows begin. I have to add memory to the 192 mB that came with it.
Before you install sp3 be sure to look at device manager and install drivers for unknown devices. SP3 has its own drivers that may not be compatible once installed. On many its the video and audio drivers. On solo3450 its the MP3 controller drivers. Sound due to registry missing the drivers may be not continuous. Once device manager is ok, then sp3 can be installed.
W95/98 startup floppy disk is great, but they are for small hdd down to 2 gB. So, you can not use them for creating partitions. You can only use them to display previous partitions and delete them one by one. Then let XP install disk to make the correct size to format and install the new operating system.
Floppy disk can be booted before grub took over the bios boot order. The floppy will boot and type in fdisk(enter) to start the partition program to display all the partitions you have to delete to get rid of grub.
The Debian distro had 3 partitions; non-dos, ext dos and non-dos partitions. The ext is file system. They were all deleted, then quit the fdisk to boot the XP cd. It boots nicely without grub in the system. XP sp3 will take 4 hours to install.
Password stored in the bios eprom can be removed by removing cmos battery for a while. Replace cmos battery if password can not be set in the bios.
In HP compaq f10 bios, you can setup and restore to default, which removes all the passwords. Default is without password.
on older computers such as laptops, the cmos battery will only last 10 years. so, most of password problems are self cleared. To get the laptop working again you need a new cmos battery.
