Smartphones use USB mode switching to connect to computer ?

iPhone uses USB mode switching to install on computers as a front end. The older cellphone do not use USB mode switching(install drivers on smartphone).

iPhone also uses a power supply for USB mode switching, upto 6v.

computer then serve as a mainframe computer for the front end. To surf internet.

Is it overkill? To use a smart phone as a front end to connect to central office for internet, and its much slower than WiFi/b of 550-900 kBps data transfer to internet?

Its just convenience if you don't have a WiFi card on the computer. Or if you don't have a hotspot to connect to?
