Can laptops be collectibles ? If only W2k can be autoupdated forever ?

What we have found is SliTaz 3.0 can make some laptops to become collectibles. They can be internet usable forever. Unfortunately, Linux wasted too many memory(drams) for library of dependency files. and layers of file systems. Plus GTK+ toolkits and workspace GUI. So, 320 mB of drams only 10 mb free, only short webpages can do.

Now that we are shaking down w2k pro sp4, it used 64+ mB using not many GUI. It does not suffer without much graphics toolkits. Its browser lacks mpeg4/h.264 compatibility and hdmi output(USB).

So, many 1999 laptops can be used as collectibles upgrading some hardware with USB connector and more power with SD form factor mainframe computers(Raspberry pi) added on USB hubs. The new ARM computers will handle new graphics.

Collectibles just mean they can still be used for the internet surfing.

Shaking down W2k?
It works with Firefox 9.01.
It needs wifi/b orinoco for upto 900 kBpa trasmission from internet.
It needs 320 mB of drams.
It needs my computer burner for dvdrw.
It needs USB2.0 hub.

Any more suggestions?

Collectible means its an investment that you keep it in good presentation condition. Clean it, polish it, and keep it is show room good looks.

And you may have to find apps to make it interesting and u pto date for an old laptop.

You may even have to place it in a dust free case.

W2k can use 4gB hdd installed with 1.4 gB used for operating system and sp4. Took over two hours to install with sp4. Most laptops(1999) video and audio drivers are supported by W2k. After 2001 laptops need W2k drivers downloaded from manufacturers of your laptop.

Firefox autoupdate keeps it fresh on the internet. If hardware and operating system is matched; you only need to pay attention to browser(256 mB of drams). Can use facebook and twitter and youtube.

Orinoco drivers(agere 7.82 and ezip v3.5) made wifi pc-cards easy to install and fast to surf or download software from free hotspots. Once device manager is perfect, you may not have to touch the operating system ever again.

W2k with sp4 and Firefox autoupdate can survive. Even w95/98 with Firefox v1.5.0.12 can still surf the internet, although no online banking, without changing the version number to banks' minimum requirement(v11.5.0.12?). Encryption is not a problem at all.

If cable set-top router can use W2k full time, then it has small foot print advantage over XP.

I  have one Dell c840 on W2k Firefox12 which uses RCN wifi.

So far can do everything bigdata webpages on Belkin f5d7010v1 pcmcia wifi card.

W2k has sp4 but not needed to run wifi on the internet.

SP4 not only security update, but actually can do USB with larger memory capacity or more modern devices.

So far, I think W2k can be useful for a while(pcmcia devices) until browsers are not available(firefox4).

Lucky, Firefox4 works with W2k and no new update is needed for old laptops.

XP updates corrupted bios and hdd lately.

I have been using W2k every day instead of XP.
