Bugs caused by dead cmos battery ?

How to replace battery and not the assembly which cost $3.

The assembly is made of connector, wires and a plastic insulating sleeve for the battery terminal.

To replace the battery and not the assembly means you have to disassemble it first. You need razor blade, needle nose pliers.

You slit the plastic sleeve partly so that it can slide off the battery towards the connector. Cut not quite half way up to maximum diameter of the battery.

Then you use needle nose pliers to peel off the welded contacts on the battery. You need to straighten out the metal pieces so they can become pressure contacts to the new battery.

Then you slide the plastic sleeve back on the battery. It will force the two metal pieces on the correct polarity of the battery.

The job is done, and you can insert the assembly back into the computer. It should work again next time when you need to replace cmos battery again. Stock some 2016, 2025 and 2032 whatever you need for your computer.

Once bios is kept installed by the voltage on the battery, your computer will work without any bad bios data causing unnecessary bugs in the drams.

Re: Bugs caused by dead cmos battery ?

Cmos battery when fresh measures 3.26 volts.

If not used will store 10 years. If installed fresh on your computer, it may last more than 5 years, but not quite 10 years.

If you keep your computer in hibernation instead of shutting down each night, you will never know your cmos battery is dead and loses time when main power is off. Laptops seldom do hibernation. But desktops autoupdated by Micorosoft has been hibernate at night to keep the shadowed bios stored. If you turn off the power supply, then bios revert to the original. Microsoft will have to use ,net strategy to autoupdate your computer again.

Things you may never know, is that Microsoft has been the administrator of your computer to keep it working without fail. in the last 10 years. All free support silently.

Re: Bugs caused by dead cmos battery ?

It has been my experience with old laptops that had been idle for years. Condensation might have been settled in. it is always important to turn on even if cmos battery is dead. You want to know if bios has been corupted by dried up capacitors and semiconductors by condensation. If you are lucky and bios will install itself if voltage is good on the rom.

Then you are ready to turn off the laptop and replace the cmos battery. Once new battery settled down, you can check to see if you are losing time which is also kept by cmos battery.

If your rom seemed corrupted, just leave the laptop on, for a few hours or a few days until it can boot into bios.

Proper way of operating a laptop has to be understood to run it.

cmos battery can be recharged, if laptop is powered on. But if its dead(zero volts, it may take a long time to recharge. Bios may shut down the laptop, and you have to keep on restarting it to charge the cmos battery.

Bios at zero volts, can not start the laptop.

Re: Bugs caused by dead cmos battery ?

cmos battery failure at zero volts may cause your laptop to ruin battery?

In Compaq f10 bios, when it works, you can restore the default bios settings. this may even restore battery changing software.

So, once the cmos battery failed and replaced or recharged, you have to do a bios restore to default. Then start charging your depleted battery. It may charge properly after the battery drained first, then charge while the laptop is powered off. The amber light is constantly on.

However, it may take longer than usual to charge the battery full. give it a day long.

Re: Bugs caused by dead cmos battery ?

cmos battery is made of lithium battery and shelf life is truly 10 years before failure. It can be trickle charged each day to maintain the voltage. It means the more you use your computer, the better your cmos battery will perform beyond 10 years. The capacity of stored energy will deplete if you do not use your computer for a long time.

Some day, there maybe a hibernation scheme in the bios to stop draining the battery by set clock. Then you have to rset the clock upon boot. If you use dailly then maybe no hibernation for three days of idling.
