Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Old laptops of 500mhz are generally stripped for parts on enay. The skeleton may have a cdrom left on it. Some may not have USB, but has pcmcia even cardbus. They can cost you $20 free shipping. Stuff it with 256 mB of memory and away you go.

The speed of cloud computing can be helped by WiFi/b at 1 mbps.

Once you find a Linux distro livecd that can boot WiFi on cardbus or even 16 bit OriNoco; you have a nice computer always on.

Then you can also have pcmcia CF card reader in one slot or an USB adapter for cheaper card reader. Performance can be quite pleasing. And data storage in card reader is infinite(indexed removable).

The only thing, you most likely has to do is to burn in the computer, recharge the cmos battery by leaving it always on with AC adapter. This restores the bios rom functions, absolutely necessary.

Fun with Linux as usual.
to use SliTaz for livecd, and boot WiFi see footnote:

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

One of the cheapest laptops are Compag with F10 bios. Once you stripped off the hdd, its almost impossible to reinstall OS on another hdd. You need an install cd kit that came with the computer.

So, Linux livecd is the only salvation. You need dvd to play movies, when livecd is removed after booted.

We are choosing Slitaz, Puppy and older Austrumi versions for livecd. they need to work with 256 mB of drams.

Free WiFi hotspot at the library is best for high speed download of new livecd versions.

Card reader with flash cards of HC is cheap to use as data storage locally, otherwise store your email online. Online banking need Frefox3 or newer.

Footnote:
Compaq models cheap are M300(ultra light with docking station) and M700(larger lcd screen and multibay). 500 mhz is speed enough with pcmcia WiFi/b/g. Both have USB2.0. 1 ghz is a luxury.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Are there other laptops cheap enough but good for investment for fun on the internet?

Panasonic Toughbooks, Compaq  older models, Dell c610, D600, IBM 600x, and many others.

The idea is stripped off hdd, use pcmcia bus or USB devices only but dvd saved for movies.

You can of course use flash cards for watching movies or listening to music.

You can also suggest other models of laptops cheap and functional by changine its use of architecture.

Have fun. I like to remind Knopper to make a livecd especially for laptops without hdd.  He is the one that started this all back in year 2000.

The contest is which Linux distro can be used for pcmcia WiFi, dvd movies and USB adapter on pcmcia slot.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

There is a way to use any Linux distros on the stripped down laptops.

Find the pcmcia wifi drivers listed in the kernels since 2.6.29? Then install the one in the list on your distro.

In many cases, it is easy to just install the OriNoco gold or silver in your cardbus(compatible with 16 bit). Turned out the 1 or 2 mbps data rate is quite fast for 500mhz or better cpu. Understanding that a fixed data rate is not shabby, when too many wifi users can force your data rate down to 1 mbps.

So, there you are, OriNoco can cost $7.5 on ebay. It should work with any newer Linux distro.

The cutting edge modification is to change to old hardware to fit the Linux compatibility.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Every time you receive an old laptop you have to run it for two weeks continuously. This will make hardware usable by curing the dried up old electrolytic capacitors and recharge old cmos battery to recover bios settings. When cmos battery is still usable, it will keep time when your computer is shut down. Some times it even reduces condensation on semiconductors to make computers functional again(also low temperature annealing on charge injected gates which takes two weeks).

Have fun? Its cheap.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

What tiny Linux is good for?

Until Knoppix did the livecd, Linux was not easy to use(ext3 data corruption from write back cpu i586/i686). Livecd made stripped down laptops usable with pcmcia WiFi(OriNoco drivers already in kernel 2.6.29 and beyond).

Tiny Linux loads fast, then operates in drams very fast.

You still need a DVD. Minimum 320 mB of drams. pcmcia devices. USB 2.0. Battery. Keyboard and touch pad. Largest lcd screen. USB or pcmcia card reader for data storage without hdd.

Your budget maybe only $20.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Finally, put a M700 together for Puppy lucid 5.01. No hdd, but cdrom, battery, USB external dialup modem, and logon to internet. Can add pcmcia card reader to store software.

Surprise to find no internal dialup modem drivers(lucent). No pcmcia wireless cards will work with the included drivers for pcmcia. But I am on internet to post this info with USB dialup.

Went to the library and downloaded the Puppy 5.28. Hope my collection of wireless cards will get me on internet. I have several OriNoco, and prism2.5 chipsets. Probably easier to get USB Ralink or Realtek wireless to work on USB. Found acx-pci which is TI chipset for Wiswcom gl242201-ot driver which worked for pcmcia card.

Fun with Puppy is running with browsers on pcmcia card reader, instead of remastering every change of software for a permanent install on hdd.

Its more versatile with software on interchangeable  infinite data storage flash cards.

html viewer as a browser on 501 is better than Dillo on 528.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Next is to try SliTaz with pcmcia Wisecom using acx-pci for Ti WiFi chipset on stripped down M700 laptop.. The only pcmcia wifi card in SliTaz 3.0 working is using b43 drivers and 38 firmware files installed. That card is Linksys WPC54g v1.2 with a broadcom BCM4309 chipset. However, my Linksys WPC11v3.1 is quite different. I might have to buy a 54G for SliTaz 3.0.

M700 is about 11 years old. Many cmos battery died long ago if computer gas not been used. The bios rom options are not kept by battery and the software of the bios has been corrupted. It needs a good battery to straighten out the bios on the architecture of the computer. Multibay can switch peripherals(battery, dvd, cdrom, floppy, LS-250), but rom can get stuck if main battery is not in the computer.

Its surprising that if you charge the main battery, the bios in the rom will straighten out and operate correctly even if its a bad main battery. ie., the cdrom will boot the livecd. The floppy will boot windows startup disk to use cdrom and scandisk.

So, we are learning about how hardware of the computers work. Bios must install all the peripherals.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

It took a few moments to sort out how WiFi pcmcia cards are installed. Netbox to Wifi manager to auto detect and found Dlink range booster DWA642 as Ath9k and use B43 firmware.

Once we found out how to install drivers, we can config for wlan1, 13 channels and managed access point. Scan wifi got a list of hotspots to connect. This is the way to get SliTaz on WiFi. Both Puppy and SliTaz use autodetect. SliTaz being tinier is much faster than Puppy.

It is easy if you have BCM4309 chipset or intel Centrino chipset. Many wifi cards are not detected, so make your life easy to try a few cards that can be detected.

Now we can use this M700 laptop at the library on free WiFi hotspot or at any MacDonalds.

Even WiFi /b is fast enough at 1 mbps data rate or 100 kBps. I reported library download at close to 200 kBps max. 55 kBps min depending on the number of users at the library at any time. On 08/24/2011, 09:24, log on internet at fplpublic library.

Next task is to add Firefox to Puppy and SliTaz for online banking. So far the default browser Midori seemed ok for most webpages. I am using March 2011 SliTaz.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Temporary not doing much to this livecd version of SliTaz(march 2011) can use WiFi with Dlink range booster DWA642. New SliTaz seemed to have some problems discussed on the forum. Midori can be the default browser for my work.

M700 works ok, except the cheap power supply I bought on ebay(smart charge SCH-401 may be defective after using it for a few days. It shuts off unexpectedly, maybe too hot internally. Green light always on when shutting down the power.

I guess I have to spend more for a Compaq power supply.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Now that I found this SliTaz 3.0 to be useful for old laptops and WiFi connection; you might also want to use it.

If you have trouble finding it to download. reply here and I can supply a copy for $10 US, deliver by USPS postage free shipping. Pay by Paypal to my account there.

SliTaz cooking had moved on to kernel 2.6.37 and has some bugs now. The copy I have is kernel 2.6.30.

SliTaz 3.0 is a great solution to run an operating system on laptops with only drams, pcmcia WiFi and card reader. Once you are on the net, SliTaz is quite fast for webpage downloads. Although SliTaz has ppp in netbox, it does not have wvdial, so no external dialup modem permissible.

You might even be able to sell some stripped WiFi laptops with SliTaz 3.0 on ebay for profit, fitted with 802.11b or better pcmcia WiFi card.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

The wifi drivers are indeed a mess so far. In order for so many hardware to work with 802.11/b/g/n, the drivers had to support all the features. So far, the good drivers are b43, ath9k and p54pci. All the other drivers may or may not work with all the cards made by specific brands(broadcom, atheros, and intersil, lucent are the brands of good drivers mentioned).

When you buy on ebay, Ralink and Realtek rule on new devices, they supply the new drivers. Older wifi devices only /b is safe, but not /a cards for free wifi hotspots.

To install wifi cards on Linux OS distros, know which version number kernels you have. The kernels now install wifi by auto detect. 2.6.32 in Puppy may install Wisecom wifi card (TI chipset acx-100), but not in kernel 2.6.30 of SliTaz3.0 stable.

Mix and match wifi cards with kernel number may be the smartest thing you can do with Linux drivers.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Why is livecd now acceptable all of sudden? Only if you never shut down the laptop. Livecd runs the computer in drams, and is the fastest way to transfer data. You turn on the laptop, and hibernate then resume for instant on.

The new hibernate technique is to keep the last session data and shut down. when you turn power back on, it runs the last session of your computer operation. This means you have flash card instead of drams(non volatile 256 mB of srams). This means laptops will have different architecture. No more DDRs, and no more loading of data to DDR to boot the laptop.

Nand flash card is now changing the computer technology by hibernation and resume the last cloud computing

Autoupdated W2k pro has power off hibernation to last session resume. It saves laptop battery usage. You have to power on to resume the last session of cloud computing. It still takes quite some time to resume, using sdram. If USB flash card is used, time to resume will be faster.

Double data rate is a technology and is not restricted to drams. It uses double the clock frequency to add another data channel on the trailing edge of the slower carrier frequency wave. We will see double data rate on USB soon.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Livecd has not booted into internet portals yet. It can be booted into Google.com to get apps and games; but alas, it can only work with android phones(OS).

So, we have to boot into facebook and use Adobe openGL to run apps and games in facebook.

Which means you need Firefox to use adobe flash player without php problems in internet explorer.

Eventually cloud apps and games are available to everyone.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

On older laptops, speed on internet is very important. Using windows, you have system tools which has disk cleanup feature. This can clean up the temporary internet data. Which is activex, java scripts and other webpage specific data. Its stored and could be 118 kB long.

When you do disk clean up periodically, you gain speed booting facebook and twitter on the internet.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Unfortunately, livecd operating system using linux distro require too much drams 512 mB to be ideal.

Anything less than 320 mB is not usable on internet.

So, we have been going away from Linux systems, and restore laptops with W2k or XP using 256 mB or less if virtual memory on the hdd is used(more than 128 mB of dram for W2k)..

So far, we have found W2k more usable on older laptops.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

Old laptops are interesting investment if you only have desktops before.

Old laptops have everything you need in one box. HDD virtual memory if its  a really old laptop with limited memory installed.

Livecd is an option for laptops sold on ebay. W2k sp4 for wifi laptops that came with it. Some came with XP sp3. The price difference is $40 vs. $70, your choice.

Either way, its a bargain.

Re: Old laptop bought cheap without hdd but dvd on ebay ? LiveCD wifi web

If you don't yet have iPhone, you can fool around with old laptops of minimum 300 mhz, and run wifi on cable modem.

Get online banking and facebook, you are almost there doing smart phone texting(short message) on bulletin boards.

I have been using W2k and XP on these old laptops bought from ebay, waiting for remote wifi from ARRS.

Livecd system is cheap but you should have a dlink dwa642 wifi pc-card to be used with slitaz 3.0 stable to get on internet without fuss. Two years ago, we have discussed this shake down extensively on PIII systems.
