Netbooks made of Intel demo circuits are 4 times more expensive using vga system. Smartphones using ARM cpu saves battery life and is much cheaper to produce with hdmi system.
When 7" tablets market start to develop, the cost of system design made chromebooks not as attractive with android 3.1.
Android 2.2 for smartphone can be very effective on ARM tablets with USB, hdmi and 32 gB on microSDHC memory card. Its cost effective doing the same jobs. But broswer is IE6, very limited.
It could be a docking station by USB socket for cheap cell phones.
On the other hand, there are now netbooks of ARM cpu, which sells at less than $99 at CVS. Which is very similar to tablets in capability. The choice is to use mobile webpages on the internet.
Unlike chromebooks which is sold at around $400 with Intel atom cpu, ready for the usual internet webpages.
Have you tried the mobile text online banking at Bank of America? Chas.com for credit cards are going for simple webpages, soon.
Once tablets and netbooks using arm cpu is improved by using better lcd, and the operating system can be autoupdated. They will be rugged and can stand many years of hard use. Touch screen needs protective cover.
WiFi is free at many places now. Sometimes the hotspots also available on the side walk(19% signal strength).
Recently, HP lowered their price on tablet to $99 for a 10" lcd. Their WebOs sold 249,000 units immediately. The cpu is not x86.
The suggestion is that most computer use is now cloud computing, and the need is fast connection free hotspot. You home computer can be merely P III cpu 1 ghz. Os runs in drams for speed without virtual memory in hdd. This bottoms out at 1 mbps data transfer as minimum requirement.
We can start to strip down our desktops then add wifi? Not so fast? You need free hotspot. So, you need old laptops for home and free hotspot in town.
But home desktop still can be backed up by dialup modem at 5.6kBps, if webpages are reduced pixels. Online businesses are trying to strip down graphics, which is so called experience(a waste of time in data transfer speed).
This suggestion sounds like too much work. But many refinement are done while we sleep by some autoupdate in browsers and video protocol.
Do you still need printer? Maybe occasionally for airline tickets proof of purchase. Paperless operation has no invention to provide proof by credit card records on airline records of tickets issued.
Killer apps are still waiting to be discovered for paperless world.
Tablets doing smartphones often have more games. iPad is very expensive, but Apple will keep it interesting.
Android is going after netbook to service enterprise cloud computing, its bloated and needs autoupdate frequently. Meaning it gets obsoleted very quickly, or every six month when kernel version numbers change.
In the end, tablets can be carried everywhere. And the information you need is on the net. You only need to do search engine on the net most of the time. Music maybe more interesting to the users like iPod..
Android is flooding the market with consumer electronics items, but difficult to keep up with Linux kernel changes.
Netbooks are still mostly desktop apps to keep clock time and schedule on calender.
Smartphone is booted into internet and then use phone by choice. Internet updates clock and speed dial help to schedule workload by speed dial for the day.
This means eventually netbooks will follow smartphones in event programming advantage,
When we try to revive old laptops one application still escaped us. Which is using large lcd screen for TV viewing, free to air atsc. Its no problem to use powerdvd to view movies if your laptop has a dvdrom.
Kworld atsc TV USB stick is about half priced at NewEGG $25. Its usb2.0. Ebay has used USB TV some analog?
The attraction is you can have portable TV on laptop anywhere. Free digital TV viewing.
Someday digital TV may yet provide another data channel if interactive with local station(GPS ground stations). We are not in favor of ipTV because of wifi traffic control wasting traffic capacity.
Netbooks may include built in digital TV to make it more useful to see movies on TV; instead of the missing dvdrom..
The question is can tablets be both netbook and smartphone?
Netbook with skype or sip that can connect to POTS is the answer?
With tablets in front, it becomes a video phone.
2012 CES brought Dolby back to pseudo stereo for smartphones and netbooks like Acer aspire. Small speakers and earphones can have more echo and low frequencies by multichannel re-enforcement of sound.
It may even sound like the old pseudo stereo from monaural sound reproduction. Where low frequencies are from center speaker(woofer), and higher frequencies(tweeters) build the sound sources arbitrarily.
Its impressive on demo. But will you be able to stand the higher volume of mobile sound without damaging your hearing? Linux drivers like Alsa and Pause audio may have to be reprogrammed?
Netbooks are WiFi, which ia not yet all over the place. You have to install 3G modem to get it connected to anywhere you go. And battery has to last longer.
Smartphone can be used anywhere and battery is lasting longer with new ARM cpu. But 3G is slow for video on large screen.
iPad is now 3G, iPad3 will have higher resolution which needs WiFi more than 3/4G.
Now that we looked at popular angry birds and its availability with opengl v1.3 or v2.0, we realize that android smartphone can run angry birds. While desktop with higher resolution has problems with Intel extreme video opengl version above 1.1.
So tablets can be better if doing smartphone extensions. It has problems if games are written for opengl on desktop graphics(netbooks).
Netbook unfortunately did not have speed dialing except in browser.
Smartphones are speed dialing for apps oriented. It is much faster to go from one app to another. And many more choices too.
This is the reason, that desktop is obsoleted. Without online resources, desktop also did not have pages of panels to select apps. Linux tried 4 panels of desktop, but it is not populated with icons. Netbooks did not have more than one panel per desktop window.
You can never guess what made PC era gone? But speed dialing on smartphone maybe the key to quick use of online resources; and PC is gone by the wayside. My PC at home with P4 cpu is full of icons on the one window; no way to populate another window.
Besides, servers don't need desktop. It is mostly data transfer ondemand. Servers are browser operating system oriented. Android eventually will be a server operating system for private or public data centers.
Tablets made by Samsung is now using Intel i5 cpu and took Microsoft Metro for touch screen. You can dock into keyboard and hdmi monitor at home. Use Microsoft desktop apps of old.
This trend is interesting because the tablets are 2 lbs heavy. It is not usable as hand held ebook or game playing tablets held by hand run by fingers.
After initial excitement on the hardware, people will sort it out for real apps and games. The difference is the neat condensed extension of browser apps and games. then there are the overloaded codec used by the old desktop apps and games. Still the mobile cellphone convenience can not be replaced by heavy desktop tablets.
So, PC era maybe continuing, but by how long a period?
What we can do with old laptops is to get them into the tablet software acquisition. So that older laptops are doing tablet apps and games. This approach is very aggressive. But its easy and like duck soap(enjoyable).
First, older laptops had to have the speed of download from internet by using WiFi/b.
Then you get on portals to get apps and games such as games.yahoo.com or zone.msn.com. But facebook is probably more current on most popular apps/games, because its their sponsored ads income($1 billion/quarter).
So, its fun to keep up with our older laptops and software. The new extensions of apps and games on browsers need opengL codec to work(adobe flash player v11).
Tablets are not only doing netbooks, but even going laptop style with docking station using intel platforms. But it becomes too heavy to use as a tablet for games and simple apps. It is certainly not good for desktop apps on productivity office reports without keyboard and mouse.
Tablets is not really good as a smartphone either. It maybe alright to do texting or email using stylus.
On the other hand, people love it for pictures and movies display. Great for facebook perhaps.
When this generation of new iPhone comes with larger 4" screen, DTV maybe the addition to phones. The back now can have free digital TV antenna? This marketing scheme is not new, HK phones had analog TV feature long ago. But for Apple to out think Samsung, TV is necessary.
Tablets need to be hand held so typing with stylus is slow; it is basically only good for internet apps and games. With speed dialing(icons) for quick website switching, to get work done on webpage apps.
Netbooks are the laptops with longer battery life. It can do speed dialing as well as typing for emailing. so, why is it not more popular than tablets? Tablets can have 9 hour battery.
Microsoft surface tablet is a netbook for desktop productivity with a keyboard. However, directx can not do browser apps without openGL. Hence the change to metro.
Kindle is ereader. iPads are ereaders. The trend of smartphones without keyboard, but use voice to text inputs like navigator. Ereaders can do website and webpage switching to do productivity. Email is productivity in cloud computing getting things done by communications and collaboration. So, smartphone productivity will have project directory to group email storage to review productivity of a project. The cloud computing of the future? Put emails in a webpage for review by time and date stamped sequence.
Facebook is bulletin board, it shows email on the wall for collaboration. Twitter is SMS bulltin board, but lacks organization. Important messages are not grouped for prosperity. Loosy goosy in presentation by individuals. It may easily group messages by search engine at a glance by time and date stamp timely priority.
Smartphone and tablets will be more developed than desktop formal applications without connectivity, grouped info, to enhanced collaboration at a glance.
Software will make smartphone the choice of a platform and/or format.
The shift to smartphones for internet data downloads, had tablets designers confused especially microsoft surface. People thought if only tablets have a keyboard and mouse, then it is a netbook? Well, it isn't.
Loose parts that you supplied with tablets are just not as usable(you need a desk).
The trend also is extending battery life for tablets. Which makes camera function lack of lighting control.
Its not yet perfect for a large smartphone design to be a tablet. Even though it plays games well. iPads needed a fine point(scriber) to use the touch screen, fingers are too large for small icons to be activated such as selecting an email to view.
Apple now tries to have better illumination of the touch screen, using ambient light sources if available. smartphones however is more convenient to use even if slower to manage.
ASUS just came out with a tablet docking station for smartphone. It served as a server and monitor for smartphone working in an office.
great for telemarketing. Or other paperless office work(bulletin board quality control summary).
