Knoppix 6.4.x livecd architecture and as a Linux distribution ?

Knoppix livecd can be bug free. It now supports Linux kernel 2.4.x and the add-on kernel 2.6.x. The idea is to run as much kernel 2.4.x bug free as possible. Then some ambiguous application will run on kernel 2.6.x. This is obviously a major statement on Xorg display using 2.4.x or 2.6.x. The window manager is LXDE, with KDE tools in Gnome gtk graphics.

The use of kernel 2.4.x and /dev made many drivers universal, and special drivers in /usr for USB peripherals. Hardware compatibility is improved.

This approach made Knoppix using Debian independency of kernels unique. Applications do not need fixing when kernel versions change(especially 2.6.x). Many applications can still use kernel 2.4.22 and up.

Livecd also can not be corrupted by writebacks of data in filesystems.

Most distros stopped using /dev drivers and run into compatibility problems(file names options etc.).

Kernel 2.6.39 now included USB drivers,no longer a choice between /dev or /usr. But the USB storage flash cards had to be mounted. This took care of android 3.1 tablets.

Re: Knoppix 6.4.x livecd architecture and as a Linux distribution ?

Often, Linux distros do not tell people how much memory will work better. Without garbage collection, memory will overflow and applications may no longer display as you keep on working without reboot. Reboot to clear previous memory will allow you to work on another application with sufficient memory cache.

Knoppix 6.4 is no exception. Generally, livecd(s) with Linux operating system on the internet require a minimum of 1 gB. I personally prefer to use only tiny linux and 512 mB and do short sessions, not opening too many apps to stay on the internet.
