Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

Netbooks were dvd players made into PC; slow but slightly cheaper. While offering Linux was cheaper but cheapens it further with limited software functionality. You can use the same speed laptops of nine years ago even if you have Wifi/n and spend less. People predicted netbook first generation is toast with Ubuntu 10.04.

Tablets and smartphones are not PC architecture. They are  ARM platform with fewer chips, They have more analog and digital mixed signal capability. They have more cores for multitasking on the web. Web is TV display 720p and net is vga display 1024x768.

This makes tablets more efficient than netbooks? But netbooks are now less than $100 with slow Via ARM cpu(300 mhz) sold in drug store CVS. With WiFi instant on net download, it is quite usable for cloud computing in enterprise network data display system. Upload and download speeds are ok for enterprise network, unless resolution must be 1024x400(1080p) on 7" or 10 " LCD.

why is it cost effective with 300 mhz cpu? It is the WiFi speed of data transfer from the cloud and pixel scanning of analog display. 300 mhz cpu can also be 4 cores, doing multitasking simultaneously instead of symmetrical processing. Maybe selling it in drug store is going into the wrong market, just to blog social networks(may need tutorials to get friends or followers) or email with friends. Having more resolution in the second generation netbooks will make client for enterprise system marketable.

Blogging is a good hobby. Cheap toys can be useful to keep people occupied. But webbooks and netbooks are confusing the market place at the moment.

Re: Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

The market will sort out the application of these webbooks. The biggest market is ipTV or music radio station worldwide selection(or ham radio too on social networks). Where not much attention is needed, but it will entertain.

Its portable and can be carried around.

So when telephone became TV and radio, the entertainment center changes its shape.

Footnote:
Ham radio is the old version of social network to use radio transceiver to find friends around the world of ham radio owners. Today social network also reaches friends around the world, but not collecting postcards to show that your ham radio reach some parts of the world. Social network today have many risks. Ham radio is honerable and safe from risks. Webbook can use the post card collection idea to clean up social network of deceit and foolery.

Re: Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

There is a seachange in computer technology since the official change by law of analog TV to digital TV(2007) and video using mpeg4/h.264. Connector to TV is now hdmi, no longer vga monitor. This stripped off the cost of video processors. And ipTV can be displayed on computers.

Then tablets now use WiFi hotspots free to telephone on free voip telephony(using email packets). It can be instant on connecting to internet too.

This technology change reduced cost of making tablets by 400%. Cheaper netbooks can no longer compete in the market place.

Re: Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

Old laptops with 500 mhz up cpu is faster than wifi tablets of 1 ghz. Reason embedded ARM cpu and its operating system is slower? The wifi speed is the same. older laptops may use faster drams; whereas, tablets uses sd card which are slower..

So, the older laptops may also be cheaper by far as long as hdd is missing. SliTaz can be used free. Internet surfing is not intersive cpu usage on wifi data transfer so cpu stepping eventually willwork at top speed.

Older laptops also have larger lcd screen which can playback movies, much better viewing.

Its a bargain on ebay, ready for you to invest.

Re: Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

Netbooks are no longer selling, many stores no longer stock them. Tablets $99 obsoleted netbooks at $299/399.

Older laptops are $20 on ebay, which you have to fix up. Now we are getting linux micro and nano operating systems to run those older laptops with free WiFi. Browsers are mobile text to watch same as smartphones but on large screens.

Older laptops need wifi, flash cards on USB or pcmcia to speed up for video streaming apps.

It has been fun, and usable realtime.

Re: Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

The reason that old laptops are revived easily is the way it gets connected to the internet free at stores and fast food joints. Currently, wifi traffic control can do 450 kBps, it is very fast display of webpages. And you can still use 333 mhz cpus. Cpu speed can be 333 mbps for 333 mhz clock, which is about 33300 kBps.

Now that the math shows the potential, we can still speed up Wifi 10 times to run the cpu at its maximum potential.

It is important then, to simplify the data bus in computer architecture. No pci, no agp, isa, serial and parallel buses buy only USB. this save time to convert clock frequencies of different buses. While older laptops can not be USB only, using less peripherals help to reserve cpu power for data transfer speed(wifi). For cloud computing on the internet it is browser and wifi. It is also fun to squeeze all the speed out of cheap used laptops from ebay.

Paperless operation require no printer but free email storage of data valuable to you(avant browser) skin for IE6(XP). Other may follow with quick data save features later.

Firefox is now kicking on wifi connection when you launch it. But its redundent, because booting the operating system already connected wifi. Perhaps Firefox can change the wifi connection to 5.5 mbps data rate to get 450 kBps downloads of webpages?

We are making some serious improvements in wifi traffic control. More R&D can improve another 10x in speed of wifi downloads(true 54 mbps data rate) by using discriminator and 2x oversampling technology(double data rate multiplexer data channels on carrier frequency)?

Having fun, more to come? If i286 10 mhz laptop has pcmcia can run orinoco at 5.5 mbps, it can download pretty fast from internet websites? But pcmcia slots came with pentium I laptops.

Footnote:
OFDM has A and B channels, which has to have cache to feed the packet, and cache to read both data channels when received. If we add 2x oversampling and subsequent double data rate data channels; OFDM will have four data channels and 4 data cache to read at the same time. CPU load will be heavy and may make mistakes? Currently DSSS 5.5 mbps data rate is much easier to read the packet. so, we may just use OFDM A channel for data transfer and B channel for checksum or empty without data. This will make sure data integrity is the best possible. then later add data to B channel if cpu is multicored? In other words, operating system has to select OFDM data rate for best results?

Re: Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

The question always is desktop dead? And most people did not know how we designed the death of desktop? Slowly and purposefully.

First smartphones did not have cdrom anymore. So, you can not buy all the info and search on your cdrom. You have to connect to the internet and get all the latest info. all the apps sold in the app store are middleware to process latest data from the internet.

IBMPC is shackled to the desk, being large and heavy. Tablets can do everything and more, because it connects immediately to wifi and can access internet. We are trying to add virtual wifi network to desktops as we speak, so that we can replace DVDRW that had to buy obsolete old information to be processed on the desktop.

Have fun, the tablet is designed to replace desktops. it will do its job.

When we compared older computer design and newer gadgets, we know these new gadgets will replace the old laptops and desktops on paperless applications and published data. But we can also redesign laptops and desktops of older design to work them the same way as tablets and smartphones. $20 stripped laptops from ebay are going through Wifi design change. Next will be adapting apps from app stores to be used on old wifi fitted laptops or desktops. Wifi apps are written the same as desktop apps except it runs through wifi to get info from internet.. Its more difficult for apps store to sell apps that is an extention or plugin of a browser?

Once desktops connect to cable modem, it will have instant wifi network and can download wifi apps from app stores. Its hard to carry desktops to starbuck or macdonald's for free wifi?

Re: Netbook vs older laptop; tablet vs. smartphones ? desktop dead ?

Desktop apps are dead because of the lack of connection to the search engines on the internet. There is no question on that conclusion. Apps stores of smartphones and android apps had obsolescence problems too; many are removed from the stores.

WinCE using .net framework also is facing obsolescence. The programming of apps is facing reduction of unnecessary graphics of rich experience. Data compression is now testing reduced pixels as data compression. Pixel braille is the latest data compression where one pixel(location, color or resolution) can represent a font character by chart conversion. Achieving 16x9 to 1 ratio in texted webpages.

Pixel data compression(character recognition) will replace ascii code teletype invention of the 1970s technology for data transfer.
