Austrami boot from USB Flash

Congratulations, for the great job!

Running Austrami from CD, I have no problems on 2 laptops, Toshiba-Satellite and HP.

I’m not able to run Austrami from HDD or USB Flash always is getting to:

[stage1]
LiveCD version
Scan CD-ROM dev
Austami not found on CD. Press Enter…..

My search with Google did not help me. I modified the lines in GRUB4DOS as:

For USB with and no isolinux files in dir /austrami:

title Austrumi-2.1.6
root (hd1,0)
#find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /austrumi/austrumi.fs
kernel /austrumi/bzImage root=/dev/sdb
#        initrd  dolivecd  lang_en
initrd /austrumi/initrd.gz
boot

or
title Austrumi-2.1.6
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /austrumi/austrumi.fs
kernel /austrumi/bzImage root=/dev/sdb
initrd /austrumi/initrd.gz

or
title Austrumi-1.9.3  --  ISO
find --set-root /austrumi.iso
map /austrumi.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
chainloader (hd0,0)+1
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel /austrumi/bzImage lang_en
#initrd  dolivecd
initrd /austrumi/initrd.gz
boot

On the HDD:

title Austrumi-2.1.6
root (hd0,0)
#find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /austrumi/austrumi.fs
kernel /austrumi/bzImage root=/dev/sda
#        initrd  dolivecd  lang_en
initrd /austrumi/initrd.gz
boot

and always is looking for Austrami on CD?!....

What is the catch?

Will you please, give me sample entries for GRUB4DOS or SYSLINUX, how I can run Austrami from USB Flash.

Thank you!

Re: Austrami boot from USB Flash

If you can use livecd, run it and install it on a USB key, Austrumi has a program to do USB key installation(sdb1). At the same time, you can also do installation of austrumi on the hdd(hda1) from dram, using hddinstall. Do not try to install on partition other than hda1!

Austrumi uses lilo for dual boot with WinXP, if you install it on hda1 from dram.

So, to use grub4dos, you have to avoid lilo, that maybe difficult for anyone not familiar with lilo? Let us know how you would avoid lilo and install on grub4dos from Austrumi script to install on hda1.

Re: Austrami boot from USB Flash

Thank you for your explanation and time.
In short, (by my understanding) you do not have direct option with GRUB4DOS and SYSLINUX…
Now, I will learn about LILO to see what I can do and I will let you know or … just forget for Austrami (too bad…).

Re: Austrami boot from USB Flash

Austrumi has five or more languages for beginners who can install it with XP for dual boot. So, lilo is fine if hddinstall sets it up. on the other hand, grub has many versions and is added after you decided to install Austrumi somewhere in the hdd partitions. If you install Austrumi without modifications on hda20, lilo might wipe out hda1 and whatever is on it. Beware. And remove lilo from hddinstall script for grub of any version.

Stage1 missing Austrumi, just need a symlink from cdrom to hdd(hdaX) where you installed Austrumi for grub?

Re: Austrami boot from USB Flash

Following the simple logic, I renamed isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg and inside replaced dolivecd with dousb… was so easy, if you know it…no need to mess with LILO…There is a option not to install LILO in MBR, I used... is OK.
Thank you

Re: Austrami boot from USB Flash

Most of Austrumi logic is single user in history, that has to be modified to doUSB or in hdaXinstall?

I am glad you had fun?

Now you know enough about Austrumi to become one of their english language developers. will you?

Re: Austrami boot from USB Flash

Austrumi wireless??

Running Austrumi(recent ver.2.6.5 and 2.6.8) on USB flash
on Acer ASPIRE One, the boot process stacks at:

"Attempting to connect eth0 by via DHCP server.
No state is preset for card MID
Found hardware:"HDA-Intel" Realtek
syslogd: unknown facility ALC272X name "AUTHPRLVNONE"
Austrumi.example.net login:Failed to obtain IP address."

I used  nodhcp and  ip=frommedia, but did not help.
Any tips?!

Re: Austrami boot from USB Flash

For wireless connection, you have to have a wireless network server with an ip address. then you install driver for your own wireless device in Austrumi. When you boot Austrumi, connection to the internet will be done.
